The most notable distinction between synthetic wigs and human hair wigs, is the fiber. Synthetic wigs are made from man-made materials such as polyester or acrylic, while human hair wigs are made from human hair that has been donated. This makes a difference in everything about the wig; how it looks and feels, how to care for it, and how long it will last.

Synthetic wigs come styled and hold their style after washing. Because of this, synthetic wigs require less maintenance, and are great for grabbing and going for an everyday wig. They tend to be less expensive than human hair wigs, and come in more colors and textures. Synthetic wigs cannot be styled with heat, unless they are specifically labelled heat resistant. They do not last as long, which is around 4 – 6 months with frequent wear.
Human hair wigs look and feel more natural than synthetic wigs. Human hair wigs can be washed, curled, straightened, and dyed just like our hair. Human hair wigs are more expensive up front and take more care, but if cared for properly, human hair wigs can last a year or more (or up to three years with occasional wear). Human hair wigs are often preferred by wig wearers who will wear the wig daily, and want the most realistic and personal option.
When we decide between synthetic or human hair wigs, it really comes down to lifestyle and preference. Some people enjoy the take off the stand and wear use of a synthetic wig, while others appreciate the wearability and versatility of a human hair wig. There is no right answer, just the right decision on how you want to wear your wig, your style and your world.
