A strapless black chiffon gown that featured a corseted PVC panel at the bodice that was lined with a golden chain crisscrossing the neckline. That moment in haute couture history was brought to the living world to remember Karl Lagerfeld’s brilliance in how easily he crafted a classic silhouette, while still incorporating thrilling details.

Margot Robbie embodied the kind of restraint with her accessories that preserved the archival nature of gown. Lightly waved hair, naturally made up, understated jewelry, etc. All of this would seem like common sense, but it speaks to practice. While it is hard to find celebratory moments in a room filled with glamour and flair, Margot Robbie’s situation is always a little different. It felt special because it was authentic to the theme of the night. Even though each year we see many guests make flamboyant representations of the theme of the evening, it was nice to see someone just wear the actual piece of clothing that Lagerfeld designed. It wasn’t just a red carpet outfit; it was an introduction to Chanel history, with new ‘meaning’. In fact, it was reported by fashion critics as being, ‘elegant and culturally relevant.’ The true story gets lost pretending that every single piece needs to be fresh, fresh and exciting; and sometimes, it is just about the vintage.

In her role for the Met Gala 2023, Margot Robbie (at least for me) was more than a style statement on the red carpet, it was a historical moment. Margot Robbie connected a vintage design from 1993 fashion through Chanel’s codes; to the current state of fashion. The attire was elegant, archivable, enduring, and it will always remain part of Chanel’s legacy. It was, arguably, the most sincere gesture of tribute and unhypocritical; not because it intended to be. It was a distinctive experience of the true anticipation of clothing.
